Interview with Dave and Lillian Brummet from BrummetMedia

A few years back we interviewed  Award-winning author, Producer and Radio Host Lillian Brummet and today we are back with her and Dave from BrummetMedia to know what are they up to so far and what's in store for us readers 

Q: What are the biggest surprises you’ve encountered as a writer?

D: The surprise was that the work only increases after your book is published. As a self-promoting team, we have to do everything we can to get the book to the attention of the audience we wish to target. Of course, this was different decades ago when you might have a publishing company involved in this, but the world of books has changed. Unless you are a big name you are going to be on your own for most of it and it can be intense. You need to have a well thought out plan and stick to it in order to get noticed. Flexibility is the key – always be ready to adapt to whatever comes your way. It will keep you pliable and ready for anything. 

Q: What do you do when you are not writing?

D: I play drums in a rock band whenever possible. I also teach both drum kit and hand drum lessons. I have an active repair shop in which I build, fix and tune djembe drums (among others) and manufacture a few percussion accessories as well. I enjoy doing the graphic design work for all our marketing and that is a never-ending learning journey in itself, but certainly an enjoyable one.

Q: Who, or what inspired you to pursue a career in writing?

L: The first writer I ever knew was my mother, who dabbled at the craft for a short time. Later, teachers would comment about my writing, truly moved by what I wrote. These were the earliest influences, slowly pointing me in this direction. Some of my poetry was published, then I won some writing awards... later I took some career evaluation tests and writing kept coming up as a career option. Dave's emotional support and strategic skills have been of great value; having that strength, someone to mull over the details with - it is a huge benefit.

Q: How many books/stories have you written?

L: I've only written a couple non-fiction short stories, numerous non-fiction articles, both product and book reviews, and a total of 7 published books (one of which is no longer available). We did have an ebook (Jump Start For Writers), but that no longer exists. Currently, we have a 2-book series on green living (Trash Talk), 2 books of poetry (Towards Understanding; Rhythm & Rhyme) and there's a newly revised book filled with marketing advice for writers (Purple Snowflake Marketing). Our most recent release is a cookbook: From One Small Garden that, as you might derive from the name, focuses on recipes that help people take advantage of garden harvests and reduce food waste.

Q: How many (books) bookshelves do you have in your home?

D: We are still bookies. We have about 7 or 8 bookshelves throughout the house and studio. I will never stop reading real books as it has a much more intimate feel than a screen. A lot of the books I have are technical manuals on computer software, photographic technique books, books on drums and percussion and sound or rhythm therapy.  

Q: What have you learned about while working with your spouse?

L: Verbal communication is a challenge for me and I have to say that has been my biggest learning curve through our 2 decades of working together, and our 30+ years of marriage. It took a while for us to determine which of us had a better knack for this task or that duty, and over time we just slid into our roles and did our best to support each other in any way we could. We learned to give each other space to do what needs to be done and to be gracious when one of us has personal challenges. We have regular, spontaneous meetings and brainstorming sessions. We talk about what needs to be done and determine priorities based on what is realistic to take on that week... and we divide the duties as best we can. 

Q: Describe a typical writing day.

D: Well, when Lillian is responding to interview questions and running the social media end of things, I am working on the back end of things like images, ad creation, copywriting, or editing anything we have written together. We always proof each other’s work; it is amazing what one might miss that fresh eyes can catch. And with the graphic work, I always have a hard-nosed critic with a keen eye just upstairs from me to give an honest second opinion. What looks good to my eye after working on something for hours might be seen as too wordy or the wrong colour scheme. A fresh set of different eyes with a common understanding of the goal is the best feedback I could ask for – and she brings me cookies!

Q: What is your proudest writer moment?

L: Our Trash Talk series is probably the project that I find the most pride in. Through this series, we have influenced people all over the world to live more proactively, consciously saving money and reducing consumption of resources, while helping their own communities. My proudest moment came when the Recycling Council of British Columbia presented us with an award for "outstanding use of various media in ongoing outreach work to reduce waste in our environment" and then we were recognized as Community Heroes by the LiveSmart BC program. Mere words cannot describe how it feels to hear from our former radio listeners, and our readers over the years... their stories of how we influenced them to become proactive and make a difference. 

Q: What business challenges have you faced as a writer?

D: The learning of new software and web design has been a big challenge in my end of things. There is always something to learn in the realm of graphic design but it is a challenge I love to take on as it only increases my knowledge and ability to do all of our own promotional projects for all aspects of our business.

 

Q: What have you learned about while working with your spouse?

D: We do some of our best creative work when we are just discussing stuff together over a cup of coffee during a break. And, we always have a note pad to jot down the ideas that come bursting out because, sure enough, the best ideas are the ones that slip your memory if you don’t.

Book Review of Amayra - a photo-story book on suicide prevention by Swati Kumari

In a first of its kind Amayra:The essence of life is a fantasy photo story book on suicide prevention  Amayra in urdu means Princess.

This is not a normal book review , this has to be one of my most loved books.Swati has come up with a wonderful idea of making this photo book with a strong message.Suicide yes ; for some this is just another word but for some this word brings down shivers , people who have faced such situations or are in social surrounding of suicidal people know how hard it is.Life is precious and she has seen many ups and downs in her life too but she has gotten up stronger every time life has been hard to her and to come up with something like this to help people in need is a wonderful step for the society.The purpose of this book is very clear to help prevent suicide and help people understand the importance of life.

When I first read the picture book I was simply amazed I actually had no idea that someone can turn her art into something so strong.I am in awe of her art and would like everyone to get an idea about the subject and contribute in what ever way one can.The book is nicely woven with strong emotions and has a smooth feel to it , the reader gets the actual idea just at the end but one can relate to as its easy to absorb.Not every book has to have a strong message but this one of its kind has a strong message and one can feel the situation and relate to it.And to make the book have the theme it should have its embedded with amazing photography.Many many congratulations Swati for your new endeavor,This is just speechless and heart touching.

Interview with Teen Blogger Avantika

Can you tell us a little about yourself , your blog(s)/website(s),and your aspirations and your hobbies?

My name is Avantika Singhal. Yes, my last name does receive some unneeded attention and I thrive on it. I am 19. I write poetry and short stories. My blog name is ‘timidandvivid/Avantika Singhal. I added my real name later so that I could establish my own identity. I started my blog when I was in 9^th grade and today, it has precisely 335 followers.

My hobbies include reading, writing and listening to unconventional music. I also have the audacity and will-power to watch Hollywood movies all day!

I aspire to not only be a celebrated writer and poetess one day but also a person who is easily approachable. I am desirous of being helpful to people in dire need of advice of any kind!

How you first got involved in with blogging/writing, are you an imaginative person?

You know, I HAD to get my work out there on the internet, for the world to see and speculate. That is how the blog came to be. I am overly imaginative. Sometimes, I have so much poetry floating in my head arbitrarily that I am almost breathless when it reaches the paper.

What do you find most challenging about blogging/writing about your topic?

It is incredibly difficult to engage your readers. You could be writing about the world’s most fascinating destination in the world and the material could be elaborate and rich with humor but will your readers make it till the end? The art of writing sensibly and not going off topic is very necessary.

Tell me about some of the people you have met while working on your blog?

One young man from France, I think? His blog extolled my work and it made me very happy. Another person from Delhi who appreciates my thoughts! Other than that, I keep commenting on other peoples’ works and it is very satisfying.

How would (someone) describe your blogging/writing style?

Simple. Beautiful. Flowery.

What do you do when you are not working on your blog?

I have taken a gap year. Thus, I am doing a multitude of activities. I am learning American Sign Language. I am sketching. I am then drooling over Hugh Jackman. Then, I am crying after reading Hardy’s ‘Mayor Of Casterbridge’.

Where do you see yourself blogging/writing wise in the next 6 months, and 5 years down the road?

In 6 months, maybe I will be bestowed with a total of 500 members on my blog.

5 years down the road, I see myself as a well know blogger who people know, recognize and want to have a cup of coffee with and talk surly politicians.

What networking do you do that you feel helps your blogging/writing business?

Twitter is oh so helpful. You just need to comprehend what will catch the eye of the people and how to use Hashtags and stuff.

How do you keep coming up with material/content for your blog? Many people struggle with coming up with different articles/posts and they only have one blog.

As a writer, I know that the urgency to blog is almost intrinsic. I look around, write about what catches my eye. I read news and if Kurdish rebels are up to something or if Anthony Weiner sexts again, I will write about it. Staying up to date with world’s happenings helps.

What’s your strategy with your blog in general?

Consistency is so important. Don’t abandon your blog if you see no likes or comments in the starting.

Any specific tips you have for newbie bloggers who want to make it in the blogosphere?

Your blog will not become a household name or a familiar name, for that matter, overnight. Be patient with your blog and be loyal to the aesthetic of writing.

What would you prioritize? Content? SEO? Traffic? Readers?

SEO Titles are more important that you’d realize. So, that first. Coherent and witty content, then. Readers are so imperative too. After all, they make or break you.

What’s the best thing a blogger can give to his readers?

A myriad of literary masterpieces. A poem on your own life. A travelogue. A realization about the society and its non permeable nature. Anything that moves a reader is a gift from the blogger.

A lot of people are interested in blogging/writing for the money earning potential. What are some tips for people interesting in making money from blogging/writing? What are some realistic expectations in regards to what can be made?

I have no idea! The last thing I want to do is earn money  on the behalf of my blog. Although, the idea is not half bad. However, I am in it so that I can share my words with variegated audiences. That’s all.

What motivates you most in life?

When I am appreciated for what I have written.

What has been your strategy for creating visibility to yourself and your blog?

This is a novel and probably sinister idea but I have started attaching pictures of myself with every blog post that I make. If it is a poignant post, then I attach a sad picture of mine. If it is a happy post, I attach a picture of me rejoicing. It helps my readers connect to me on a more real level.

What was the most challenging moment in your blog content development process and why?

I hit an impasse at the beginning of 2015. No one was reading my blog. It was a tough time. Thankfully, I kept posting content and could resurrect it gradually.

Everyone has a favorite/least favorite post. Name yours and why?

All my posts are a mixture of what I love and what I hate about them. My most favorite right now is a poem called ‘Renovatio’. It received a lot of praise for its thoughts in my summer school at Oxford University. Least favorite would be a brief article I wrote about how children are taking their parents for granted. I still stand by that but it was poorly written. It was my first blog post!

What is the story behind the name of the blog?

I am very timid in real life, Shy, reticent and quiet. But my mind is a gully of words and dreams. This is why I am vivid. This is how I become TimidAndVivid.

No. I will look these two up and connect now!

Which genre do you feel gets the raw deal?

Poetry? No one wants to read it. Some people think of it as trash or a waste of money, time and efforts. I want to stab such people.

Resourceful. Vibrant. Polite. Compassionate. Silly.

What book would you say has made the biggest impact good or bad on you?

‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker. That book altered me in more ways than one.

Do you get easily provoked by positive/negative comments??

I am ashamed in telling you that negative comments down my spirits by a very large magnitude. I try to control the irrational anger, tho.

Do you plan to write a book, as every bloggers dream it is?

Hell yes. It will be called ‘The Black Dream Of the White Girl’.

Are you a judgmental person, do you prefer to take sides instead of standing neutral?

I am not judgmental. I like listening to both the parties and make a pragmatic decision afterwards on who is right and who is not.

Your collaboration with other bloggers, are you much into social networking, tell us everything about it?

I am more of a one man army. So collaboration is seldom. I don’t mind it, tho. If you approach me with a crazy and creative idea, I would be more than happy to unite forces.

What genre attracts you the most and which genre you avoid?

I would never avoid anything. I gravitate towards poetry a lot. I am stubborn about it.

Your Views on Contests and increasing plagiarism?

Contests are interesting on WordPress. I don’t think my work has every been plagiarized. But if it was…well, you don’t want to know what the consequences would be. Plagiarism is a crime no matter what.

On winning the Award/s , Are they Really necessary.

Glimmering awards or certificates written with calligraphy are not what I am after. I seek genuine appreciation and the time for people to tell me that my words impacted them.

I have been nominated for The Lovely Blog Award and that is a big deal for me.

So what’s Next in your list?

Watching Anime. Finishing Kerouac’s ‘On The Road’ and trying to go to bed before 5:00 AM.

Blogger Interview with fashion and lifestyle blogger Flexcia D’souza

 Hailing from the land of sun, sea and beaches – Goa, Flexcia D’souza is a passionate fashion and lifestyle blogger. Her immense interest in fashion, food and backpacking has let her create a lot of content in these areas. She has a great taste in fashion, loves styling outfits and modelling, thus creating iconic fashion editorials. Also, she loves trying different food and decoding recipes in her kitchen. She was recently featured in the list of ‘Top 10 Food Bloggers in Pune’. Flexcia is also ranked ‘#1 Food Blogger in Mangalore’ and ‘#2 Food Blogger in Goa’ by Zomato. Her interest in exploring rustic places and offbeat destinations has taken her to some really interesting place which she eventually features on her blog. Here are excerpts of our interview with this young blogger.

1. Can you tell us a little about yourself , your blog(s)/website(s),and your aspirations and your hobbies!!

About me: Hey. I’d describe myself in three phrases – ‘gypsy soul’, ‘hopeless romantic ‘and a typical ‘girlboss’. That pretty much sums up my personality.
About my blog: This blog is a dream project that is a means of creative expression and exploration. ‘Flexcia Fashion & Lifestyle’ started off as a personal style, beauty and lifestyle blog that serves as an on line visual diary of my day to day life. My social media channels are an extension to the blog wherein I portray my perspective of the beautiful world around me.
Hobbies: I love exploring places, reading, trying out food, experimenting in the kitchen and spending time at the beach.
Aspirations: I want to be great at more than one things.

2. How you first got involved in with blogging/writing, are you an imaginative person?

Writing has always been a part of me. English was always my favourite subject in school, and I loved writing essays and participate in essay writing competitions. On a serious note, my writing journey began six years ago. It was during my 12^th grade that I started seriously writing to get out of the exam stress (I was preparing for my Engineering entrance). After that I somehow convinced my parents to not send me to an Engineering college and they got me admitted in St Xavier’s College. So well, I joined my Literature and Journalism course and specialised in Journalism three years later. During my first year in college, we were encouraged to contribute articles and feature stories to local newspapers and magazines. I had a lot of unpublished work, plus writing came naturally to me. So I got published for the first time five years back. And it never stopped. I freelanced with a lot of publications for a bit, including The Times of India, Abraxas, etc. About blogging; during my first year of college, we had a workshop on blogging. It seemed so interesting and so much fun, that I started blogging from the very same day. And it’s almost been five years since. Back then I didn’t know much about blogging, but gradually I learnt the difference between fiction writing, journalism, feature writing and digital writing. Last year I decided it was about time I started blogging seriously. With help from my friends and lecturers, I set up my blog www.flexcia.com and I blog about everything that interests me – fashion, beauty, food, travel, lifestyle, entertainment, etc. It’s been a journey of eleven glorious months as a blogger.

3. What do you find most challenging about blogging/writing about your topic?

Writing is always so much fun. There’s nothing really challenging since I only write about topics that interest me. I believe, if I myself don’t like something, I can’t produce an interesting piece. Until now, most of my editors have given me the creative freedom and I absolutely love how it helps me explore, understand and write.

4. Tell me about some of the people you have met while working on your blog?

The blog has helped me connect with a lot of creative and artistic people. I obviously can’t forget my virtual family (my followers on Instagram, Facebook, Roposo, etc) who show me so much love through messages and comments. I make it a point to meet people I connect with online if they seem real and inspire me in some way. There are millions of people out there, but if I can meet even a few passionate souls, it makes me happy. I also had this little blogging project I did as part of my post graduate degree, where I documented lives of interesting people I have met over the years. https://loversanddreamersblog.wordpress.com/  Also I meet a lot of celebrities and fellow bloggers at events and launches.

5. How would (someone) describe your blogging/writing style?

My writing style is very casual, fun and relatable. I do human interest stories catering to the urban youth and my tone of writing is something they can easily relate with.

6. What do you do when you are not working on your blog?

I read, cook, travel and sleep.

7 .Where do you see yourself blogging/writing wise in the next 6 months, and 5 years down the road?

I look at myself successfully running the blog www.flexcia.com for the next five years. Also, I want to join a publication - a newspaper or a magazine, and continue writing and reach out to more people.

8. What networking do you do that you feel helps your blogging/writing business?

Attending events is the best networking opportunity for me as a blogger. I meet so many people from the fraternity, talk to them and understand the industry. I use quite a few social networks aswell. I use Instagram www.instagram.com/flexcia_dsouza and Facebook www.facebook.com/FlexciaDsouza on most occasions. Then for food, I use Zomato www.zomato.com/flexcia and for fashion I use Roposo www.roposo.com/@flexcia I also use a bit of twitter, tumblr, flikr and the like.

9. How do you keep coming up with material/content for your blog? Many people struggle with coming up with different articles/posts and they only have one blog.

Ideas come at the most unexpected time. Many a times I type from my phone every time an idea strucks or make little notes on phone or my diary and work on it later. It helps!

10. Whats your strategy with your blog in general?

I don’t even know what you mean. I share my experiences about everything  and help others.

11. Any specific tips you have for newbie bloggers who want to make it in the blogosphere?

Write. Keep writing. Read. Read anything and everything that interests you. Stay motivated. Do something that motivates you to continue. That being said, getting a thorough understanding of basics and key aspects of blogging is important. I was fortunate enough to be learning it in college, but if you aren’t a media student, find other ways to learn. There are a lot of books on blogging. Pick those, and learn on your own. But know what you are up to before you start. Have a plan. Know what you want to write about. But before publishing, please learn to write and edit well. Also do thorough research and have your facts in place. Don’t misguide people through your blog. Also start a blog only if you are passionate about it. Don’t start blogging for fame or money. Writing is beyond that.

12. What would you prioritize? Content? SEO? Traffic? Readers?

Everything. It’s about having a balance. You need good content and SEO to drive traffic, you need traffic to have loyal readers.

13. What’s the best thing a blogger can give to his readers?

Time. If you can motivate even one person out there and put a smile on someone’s face, it’s a great thing. The world is full of negativity. If reading a blog is something that helps someone forget their worries and stress, I feel it’s an amazing thing.

14. A lot of people are interested in blogging/writing for the money earning potential. What are some tips for people interesting in making money from blogging/writing? What are some realistic expectations in regards to what can be made?

As in every profession, money comes if you work hard enough. Currently, it’s not only about the quality of work though, a decent social media presence can take a writer places. So again, balance. Develop your writing skills, understand your readers, deliver quality content, make contacts and innovate.

15. What motivates you most in life?

The good feeling I get after getting the task done and the recognition that follows.

Social Media.

17 What was the most challenging moment in your blog content development process and why?

Finding the right photographs/ graphics to compliment my stories. Even when I shoot, a lot of hard work goes into creating the photos.

18. Everyone has a favorite/least favorite post. Name yours and why?

They keep changing. I experiment a lot, so there is a scope of innovation in every post. Every post is different. Also it all depends on the mood.

19. Name some of the bloggers whom you look up to and why?

I follow a lot of fashion, food and travel blogs. They’re all so different and so amazing. But if I have to pick one, I love Miss Malini. I love how she single-handily started a blog sitting in her bedroom, and now has built a blogging empire and has an entire team working for her. This is how she introduces herself and it is so inspiring since I have similar dreams and like similar things. “I moved to Bombay in the millennium with 2 suitcases and a dream (and lived in a house with six girls and a pigeon!). When I started this blog I had no idea that it would become my universe. I just knew I liked to write, and that I had something to say about everything that I loved. Bollywood, Fashion, Lifestyle & Pop Culture. I also wanted people all over the world to stop assuming that India was just what they were used to seeing on the Discovery Channel – Villages and Slumdog Millionaire. My India was everything. Poverty and ache yes, but also glamour and fashion, food and gossip, luxury and travel, love and music. And of course, so many beautiful perfectly imperfect people…”

20. What is the story behind the name of the blog?

I initially named my blog ‘The Glam Doll’ going by my friend’s suggestion. But somehow didn’t like it. So soon changed it to my own name. I am a Miss Malini fan you see. *wink*

None. I love Durjoy Datta though. His books keep me sane when my mood is completely down.

26. Do you get easily provoked by positive/negative comments??

Yes. Very easily. I do not show it much, but if someone says something really nasty, it affects me real bad. But I like it sometimes since it makes me work harder to prove them wrong.

27. Do you plan to write a book, as every bloggers dream it is?

As unreal as it may sound right now, yes I do wish to pen down a book someday.

28. Are you a judgmental person, do you prefer to take sides instead of standing neutral?

I have a strong opinion of my own and I do not let anything or anyone manipulate my thoughts. I only support and promote things I personally believe in, love and stand by.

29. Your collaboration with other bloggers, are you much into social networking, tell us everything about it?

I connect with a lot of bloggers online and offline as well. Haven’t collaborated with anyone as yet, but I wish to do it someday soon.

30. What genre attracts you the most and which genre you avoid?

I love fashion, food, travel, relationships, health, shopping, entertainment.. lifestyle in general. I stay away from crime and politics.

31. Your Views on Contests and increasing plagiarism?

Contests are a great way to increase followers and almost everyone hosts contests and giveaways in collaboration with brands. It’s just becoming an extension to the blogging service you offer clients when you are a commercial blogger.
About plagiarism, that’s the first lesson taught to me in media school and I believe it’s wrong. On my blog, most of the posts are personal. So there is very less scope for plagiarism.
